Gairloch and the Gulf Stream coast
South of Ullapool the road trades geology for a coastline that shouldn't work at this latitude. The Gulf Stream reaches in here, close enough to shore that a garden at Poolewe grows plants that have no business surviving this far north, and the bays along the way run pink and turquoise rather than the grey you'd expect. Gairloch itself is unassuming: a scatter of houses around a working harbour, a bookshop-café, a Victorian hotel with a view of Skye on a clear day. It's the road either side of it that does the talking.
🧭 At a glance
Route: Ullapool → Gruinard Bay → Gairloch → Inverewe Garden, Poolewe → on to Torridon
Time: a half-day of driving and stops, or overnight if the garden and the beaches both make the cut
Best for: anyone who wants a coastline with a character all its own, plus a world-class garden
Don't rush: Inverewe Garden — budget a proper two hours, not a drive-by
📶 Before you set off. Signal is patchy along the A832 between Ullapool and Gairloch and drops out completely around Loch Maree. On Wi-Fi, open Google Maps, tap your profile icon, choose Offline maps, then Select your own map, and drag the box to cover Gruinard Bay, Gairloch and Poolewe.
1. The road in: the Destitution Road and Gruinard Bay
The A832 south from Ullapool is nicknamed the Destitution Road, built as relief work during the Highland famines of the 1840s. It's fast and sweeping today, which is exactly the problem.
⚠️ Route warning. The A832 features fast, sweeping bends but includes sudden blind crests. Do not overtake on this stretch.
Gruinard Bay

Famous for pink quartz sand and startlingly clear water, with the elevated pull-ins above the bay giving the best photographs of the contrast. The small island offshore, Gruinard Island, has its own dark footnote: the British military deliberately contaminated it with anthrax spores during weapons trials in 1942, and it stayed off-limits until a decontamination programme finally cleared it in 1990. None of that is visible from the road today — just a green island sitting in a very blue bay — but it's worth knowing what you're looking at.
Time needed: about 30 minutes.
💡 Insider tip. The roadside pull-outs just above the bay offer the best elevated photography spots to capture the pink sand against the blue water — better than the beach itself for a photo.

2. Gairloch itself
A working harbour village that makes a sensible lunch stop or overnight base, with Skye visible across the water on a clear day and enough going on to justify slowing down for an hour or two.
The Mountain Coffee Co, Gairloch
Part café, part bookshop, and a proper Gairloch institution: good coffee, hearty sandwiches and big slices of cake, with shelves of secondhand books to browse while you eat.

3. Onward: Inverewe Garden
A short drive north around the shore to Poolewe brings you to one of the most improbable gardens in Britain.
Inverewe Garden

An astonishing heritage garden flourishing on a latitude more northerly than Moscow, sustained entirely by the warm currents of the Gulf Stream. Palms, eucalyptus and rhododendrons the size of trees grow here in a garden that, by rights, shouldn't exist at this latitude at all.
Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hours.
💡 Insider tip. Because of the dense foliage and still air, midges can be very prevalent here in midsummer. Apply repellent before leaving your vehicle, not after the first bite.

5. Onward: Loch Maree and Torridon
From Gairloch or Poolewe, the A832 runs alongside Loch Maree, shadowed by Slioch, before dropping into the glacial valley of Torridon. Read the full feature on Torridon and its mountains if that's your next stop.
What to avoid
Overtaking on the Destitution Road. The blind crests hide oncoming traffic until it's too late to react.
Rushing Inverewe Garden. It rewards a proper two hours, not a ten-minute drive-by.
Skipping midge repellent at Inverewe. The still, sheltered foliage is prime midge territory in summer.
Assuming signal. Download offline maps before you leave Ullapool.
