Explore the north

Make the most of Scotland's northern Highlands.

From the cliffs of Caithness and the beaches of Sutherland to the mountains of Assynt and the coastal roads of Wester Ross, northern Scotland rewards travellers who take their time. It also brings single-track roads, busy summer car parks, long stretches with little signal and passes that larger vehicles should avoid.

Our trip plans bring the practical details together — where to stop, eat and stay, which road to take and how long to allow — before you leave.

Inside each plan

Each day on two pages, in the order you need it.

Every day follows the same structure, so the seventh morning reads as easily as the first.

  • The DriveDistance, realistic driving time, and a route note for what catches drivers out: a narrow section, a steep pass, a car park that fills early.
  • Pit StopA chosen place for lunch, what it is known for, and its website and directions.
  • Two StopsTime to allow, a practical tip — where to park, when it is quieter — and one-tap directions to the right place.
  • StayA hotel and a campsite or motorhome site for every night, with a photograph, a short description and a direct booking link.

Read the morning's pages over breakfast, and the day is set.

Plan ahead for stretches with little or no signal.

Every trip plan includes direct Google Maps links for its daily drives and recommended stops. Before travelling, download the relevant Highland map areas and save the PDF to your phone. Where the required map data has been downloaded, Google Maps can continue providing offline driving directions.

We recommend opening each day's route while you still have an internet connection. No additional navigation app is required.

Questions

Before you buy

Can I use the plans in areas with no signal?

The plans include guidance for downloading the relevant Highland map areas in Google Maps before you travel. Where the required map data has been downloaded, Google Maps can continue providing offline driving directions. We recommend opening each day's route while you still have a connection.

Do I need a separate app?

No. The plans use Google Maps, which is already on your phone.

Is it suitable for a motorhome?

Yes. Every day carries a route note, and where the usual road is not suitable for larger vehicles the plan says so and gives the alternative. Every night lists a campsite or motorhome site alongside the hotel.

Are the accommodation links direct?

Yes. Each links to the operator's own website. You book with them directly; there is no intermediary and no commission in the price you pay.

Why are there four trip plans?

Every traveller has a different amount of time. The collection gives you four individually planned journeys, from a focused five-day trip to a more relaxed fourteen-day adventure.

Can I print it?

Yes. Each plan is an A4 document; printed double-sided it reads like a magazine, and it is just as usable on a phone.
